About Umananda Temple
Umananda Temple is one of the most iconic pilgrimage destinations in Assam. The name “Umananda” means “bliss of Uma,” referring to Goddess Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Shiva meditated here, and the temple stands on Bhasmacala Hill — believed to be a place of great spiritual energy. The current temple structure was rebuilt by the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha in the 17th century after being damaged by an earthquake. Devotees believe that visiting this temple with pure devotion grants peace, prosperity, and spiritual awakening.
Timings and Darshan Schedule
Umananda Temple is open daily, making it easy for pilgrims and travelers to plan their visit. The temple timings are as follows:
Morning: 5:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Morning Aarti at sunrise)
Evening: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM (Evening Aarti before sunset)
The best time to visit is during Maha Shivaratri, when the temple is beautifully decorated and thousands of devotees gather to offer prayers. Early mornings are recommended for a serene darshan with fewer crowds.
Rituals and Festivals
The temple follows daily rituals, including Mangala Aarti, Abhishekam, and evening Sandhya Aarti. Special pujas are performed on Mondays, considered highly auspicious for Lord Shiva. Maha Shivaratri is the grandest celebration, marked by all-night prayers, chanting, and festive lights. Devotees also observe Shravan Mondays (July–August), offering milk and bilva leaves to the deity. Participating in these rituals is believed to remove obstacles and bring blessings for health and prosperity.
How to Reach Peacock Island
Getting to Umananda Temple is a delightful experience in itself. Devotees board ferries from Uzan Bazaar Ghat or Fancy Bazaar Ghat, with boats running frequently throughout the day. The ferry ride takes around 10–15 minutes and offers breathtaking views of the Brahmaputra River and Guwahati cityscape. Private motorboats are also available for a more personalized trip. Travelers should wear comfortable footwear and carry water, as there is a short climb of stairs to reach the temple from the ghat.
