About Poa Mecca, Hajo
Poa Mecca is a revered Islamic shrine located in Hajo, about 30 km from Guwahati. The shrine was built by a saint named Giyasuddin Aulia during the reign of Sultan Ghiyasuddin Balban in the 13th century. It is said that a handful of soil from Mecca was used in its foundation, giving rise to the name “Poa Mecca” (Quarter Mecca).
This sacred site houses the tomb of the saint and a mosque where devotees gather to offer prayers. The peaceful surroundings and historical significance make it a major stop for spiritual tourism in Assam, alongside other sites like Hayagriva Madhava Temple and Kedareswar Temple.
Pilgrimage Significance
Poa Mecca holds deep importance for Muslim devotees who cannot undertake the Haj to Mecca. It is believed that offering prayers here grants them spiritual blessings equivalent to one-fourth of the merit earned by performing the Haj. This makes it a place of hope and devotion for people from Assam and beyond.
Many Hindus and Buddhists also visit Poa Mecca as part of Hajo’s pilgrimage circuit, making it a symbol of religious harmony and inclusiveness.
